Document What Will Disappear

Document What Will Disappear — HBU video

Some of the work in a home becomes difficult to see as construction moves forward. Photos taken at the right time can help preserve a record of locations and conditions before finishes cover them.

Ask your builder when documentation can be done safely and whether they already keep photographs of the work. Follow site-access rules. Do not move materials, remove covers, or interfere with active work to get a photograph.

A useful record includes the date, the room or location, a wider view for context, and a closer view when needed. Label the files so you can find them later. If you have a question about something in a photograph, ask the appropriate person to explain it rather than treating the image as proof of a defect.

Questions worth asking

  • What work will be covered next?
  • Are there existing photos or records I can keep?
  • When and how may I safely document it?
  • Who can explain anything I do not understand?

Photographs can support your records. They do not replace inspections or professional evaluation.

Takeaway: Record the location and context, not just the close-up.
